STREAMING NOW: the Hottest 30 Hitz of April 1995

A blogpost header featuring a picture of Gabe McGrath in the Hitz FM Melbourne production studio and a bunch of CD covers from April 1995.

Hitz FM’s fifth broadcast featured “Dribble” hosted by Paul Dowsley and Adele Cookson. It was a listener-powered weeknight countdown show. And on Sunday nights Hitz would complile the lot into the Hot 30 countdown, hosted by yours truly.

What’s that? You wanna hear one?

I’ve got an almost-complete FOUR HOUR show to share with you! (streaming link at the bottom of this post)

Let’s go back…

This particular episode was from Sunday April 16, 1995.

Some of the tracks you’ll be very familar with. Set you Free, Total Eclipse of the Heart, U Sure Do, Girls + Boys, Here’s Johnny, I love you baby and Annihilating Rhythm.

There were many more tracks you might have forgotten; including Keep your Love (Partisan), If you want (Luciana), I see only you (Neutropic), and Save the Day (Dis-cuss).

Win prizes in the Hot 30 Countdown…

Throughout the night, there were a number of competitions to win, including a “draw the DJs” challenge for listeners with a fax. The winning entry scored a bunch of Jolt Cola merch – PLUS – a SLAB of Jolt Cola!

This particular Hot 30 countdown had some great Aussie content including Love will find a way (Bass Culture), Reach (Nova), Thunderchild (Thunderchild), Come On (Itchy & Scratchy) and Waiting (Raffles radio edit) by The Buzz Club.

Being Hitz FM there were also some remixes – like Don’t Leave Me This Way ’95 by Thelma Houston, and Big Time Sensuality (Justin Robertson Lionrock Wigout Mix) – Björk. (That one’s featured on my Top 9 Big Bass 90s songs).

Oh and fans of megamixes will be chuffed to hear one of the all-time greats… Dance Insert ’94.

The Original Hitz CD cover

Some of the listener-voted entries included tracks from The Original Hitz Volume 1 including La Luna (To the Beat of the Drum) by Movin Melodies, Something outta nothing (Love to Infinity) and Dreamcatcher (BKS).

And the recording has some fun little moments like an ID by Tommy Dysart (also known as the “Is Don, Is Good” guy). Plus flashbacks to some of the big Hitz FM faves from July 1993.

Oh, and a few ‘hit predictions’ which may or may not have come true. Anyone, enough TALKING, time for the LISTENING.

A number of TDK SA-90 cassettes, labelled with "Hitz 30" and the numbers of the chart positions on each side.

Ready for FOUR HOURS of 90s memories?

Quick note: In a couple of places, the recording will seem to ‘jump’. That’s because it was pieced together from Side A & B on multiple cassette tapes.

But 95% of the show is there – so enjoy!

    1. Oh yeah, some of the sponsor announcements that pop up in these recordings are amazing.
Frequent copyright infringement, dodgy un-PC humour, there’s a LOT to unpack.

Just a shame that this particular recording was low on ads. Alas it was a Sunday night, and early in the broadcast, so it would be one of the slowest times to fill up with sponsors.
