Gabe McGrath is a radio creative and freelance writer. His writing credits include The Sydney Morning Herald, Jetstar magazine, Wired.co.uk, and Retro Gamer. Gabe is currently writing a memoir giving an insider’s view of the phenomenal rise of Melbourne’s youth-run 89.9 Hitz FM.

Gabe McGrath is a radio creative and freelance writer.
In the early 90s, Gabe helped run The Night Crew – the youth lineup on Melbourne’s community radio station ECB (now Eastern) FM. During this time he was recruited by Hitz FM co-founder Anton Vanderlely and asked to host the station’s first breakfast show.
In the years that followed Gabe served on the Hitz FM management committee, helped in sponsorship and comedy writing, and hosted a number of different shows including the final hour of the youth station’s record-breaking 1993/94 Summer broadcast.
Gabe has completed 30 years in commercial radio as a radio creative. He’s created tens of thousands of successful commercials covering every size and type of business and community organisation. From aliens appearing in Harvey Norman to brand-building for stylish cafes to public education for domestic violence charities.
Gabe has also worked as a freelance writer, with his work appearing in The Sydney Morning Herald, Jetstar magazine, Wired.co.uk, and Retro Gamer magazine.
In 2013, Gabe contributed a chapter to the writing book ‘The Emerging Writer’ alongside writing greats including Alice Pung and John Birmingham. He’s also written online content for leading brands including Intel, Bupa and Huggies.
In August 2020, Gabe launched GabeMcGrath.com – a place for fans of 90s music and Melbourne’s youth-run 89.9 Hitz FM. Gabe’s currently writing a memoir giving an insider’s view of the phenomenal rise of Hitz FM.
