Megamix Mondays 2

I’m a big fan of megamixes, and today I’ve got you a real Hitz classic. Macquina Total 6. Or as the man in the megamix used to say “Ma KEENA Toe Tell – SAY!”

Maquina Total 6 was very popular during Hitz’s Summer 93/94 broadcast. The destinctive thuds of the approaching T-Rex. The crazy chicken noises. The finger-on-the-pulse inclusions of songs like Mr Vain (Culture Beat) and What’s Up (DJ Miko).

And now, I’ve been able to solve a big mystery about this megamix… 26 years later.

But first, a bit of background. The Maquina Total series of megamixes were released between 1991 and 1998. They originated in Spain (where their title translates as ‘total machine’) and featured distinctive CD artworks. Each one was a tribute to ‘a moment in 90s pop culture’. There’s one of Bill Clinton DJing. Two CDs with images inspired by Terminator 2. And volume 6, with obvious Jurassic Park vibes.

As I mentioned earlier, Maquina Total 6 was popular during Hitz’s 3rd broadcast. It ended up at number 42 in the final day’s ‘Top 89’. The track listing was great, the mix (and Jurassic Park theming) was cheesy but effective. And it came on 2 CDs. CD1 contained the full 11minute megamix and half the songs as extended versions. CD2 contained a shorter ‘radio edit’ of the megamix (perfect for a youth radio station, ahem) and the remaining extended singles.

Maquina Total 6 also contained controversy and a mystery. You see the producers hadn’t got permission to include Culture Beat’s Mr Vain. So they had to recall all their CDs and reissue them with a cover version of the same song. Alas the recall must have happened quite late as the ‘first’ version of the CD isn’t too hard to find.

Examples of the Maquina Total CD series

As for the mystery, when you click on the streaming link below, you’ll hear a mysterious voice at the start. Back in the 90s at Hitz, we all thought it was Italian. Of course now that I’ve researched the series – I know it came from Spain. So following a hunch, I asked an old radio friend who speaks Spanish (Cheers Matt) if he could translate. And now, after all these years… I can tell you the man in the megamix says…

“It’s been 65 million years that we’ve been waiting…”

Of course – another Jurassic Park reference.

Hope you enjoy the clip below – somebody has uploaded the ENTIRE album so there’s more than enough dinosaur-themed 90s Megamix for everyone to share.

The Maquina Total series were apparently well-known in Spain for their… well.. creative TV commercials. This one for MT6 tries to combine the special effects from Terminator 2 with Jurassic Park on a low budget, and….

Well, you be the judge…
